BRITVIC : C & C SOFT DRINKS

This looks a smart deal at a fair price.

It would be difficult to find a better fit. The two companies have been long standing distribution partners. PepsiCo will gain a stronger unified franchisee for the whole United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Ballygowan will add a necessary boost to Britvic's water range.

The acquisition also gives Britvic a better chance to shape its own destiny and fulfil further expansion potential. It coincides with a radical repositioning of Tango as a more natural soft drink. Several of Britvic's brands are already sold internationally; the C & C portfolio and a revamped Tango provide further opportunities.

Ballygowan is a hugely iconic brand and even with Britvic's recent £2.4 million investment in one of its existing bottled water brands Drench, critics have said that Drench will suffer at the arrival of Ballygowan. They may not be justified. Many soft drink heavyweights have portfolios of several bottled water brands. Britvic has always maintained that Drench is a teenager-targeted impulse purchase. Ballygowan is a different kettle of fish. I look forward to the launch of Ballygowan in the UK, if indeed that happens, and think it will sit beside Drench, Fruit Shoot H20 and the like harmoniously; completing a well-rounded and evolving range of product offerings.
