Bottled water environmental impact

Some recent facts from Canada …

  • The average bottle travels 250 kilometres from source to shelf.
  • This compares with over 2,400 kilometres for fresh fruit and vegetables as well as most consumer packaged goods.
  • 70% of Canada’s plastic bottles were recycled in 2011.
  • Recycling preserves 86% of the energy content for re-use.

More than 95% of Canada’s bottled water comes from springs on private property, not municipal water.
